Dornoch held off Mindframe and Sierra Leone to win the final Triple Crown race.

Dornoch won the 156th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, beating some rivals who were considered more likely to win.

“It was spectacular,” jockey Luis Saez said of Dornoch’s effort to beat Mindframe. Mindframe finished second. Sierra Leone was third.

Dornoch found his rhythm early and beat one of the favorites, Preakness winner Seize the Grey, who stopped in front of him.

Sierra Leone, trained by Chad Brown and jockeyed by Flavien Prat, entered the race as the 9-5 favorite. The 3-year-old horse had previously won the Blue Grass Stakes and Risen Star Stakes, and finished second in the Kentucky Derby.

But Dornoch went off at odds of 17-1.

Belmont Park is undergoing a $455 million renovation to improve the track surface, build smaller grandstands and increase open space for fans.
